Best Practices to Protect your Business from IT Security Risks

More and more organizations are moving to implement virtual private networks (VPNs) to give their workforce secure access to servers. VPNs can help prevent attackers from finding and entering your businesses servers while still allowing access to files and applications critical to your employees. Most business make the mistake of believing setting up a VPN almost guarantees no attacks will be successful, however VPNs are vulnerable to sophisticated attacks.

Enabling Two-factor authentication (2FA) on your VPN adds an additional security protocol that protects against a common specific attack on VPNs. By requiring users validate their identity when accessing your VPN, the possibility of phishing or spear phishing attacks being successful on your network is greatly reduced.

When a VPN and 2FA are correctly implemented it becomes extremely challenging for an attacker to gain access. This additional layer of security means ensures that even if the attackers manage to acquire an employees username and password they still will not be able to access the network.

Using a VPN is an important step in protecting your business from security risks, but it is not the only step you need to take. By requiring two-factor authentication for access to your VPN, you can add an extra layer of security that will make it much more difficult for attackers to gain access to your systems.

Two-factor authentication is a process that requires users to validate their identity by providing two different forms of identification. This could be something as simple as a username and password, or it could be a combination of factors such as a username, password, and one-time code generated by a token.

When implemented correctly, two-factor authentication can greatly reduce the chances of an attacker being successful in compromising your network. Even if they manage to acquire an employees username and password, they will not be able to access the network without also having the required 2FA token.
