VLAN

Also known as Virtual LAN

A logical network created on shared physical switching, keeping groups of devices separated from each other.

One physical switch can carry several isolated networks. A common layout separates staff computers, servers, voice, guest wireless, and building systems such as cameras and door controllers.

Separation only holds if routing between VLANs is filtered. VLANs that all route freely to one another through the firewall are organizational tidiness rather than a security control.

Network segmentation Dividing a network into zones with controlled traffic between them, so a compromise in one does not reach the others. Subnet A defined range of IP addresses forming one logical network segment. Network switch The device that connects wired equipment within a site and forwards traffic between them. Firewall A device or service that controls which traffic is allowed between networks based on a set of rules.
