Calculators, guides, and reference material

Everything here is free and ungated, and built to answer a question rather than collect an email address. The calculators use published prices and print their assumptions on the page so you can argue with them. The guides say what things cost and what the work actually involves.

Calculators and tools

Interactive, no sign-up, and they will tell you when the answer is not the one we sell.

IT and security glossary

277 terms defined in plain English, written by the engineers who work with them. Searchable, cross-linked, and free of the vendor language that made you look the term up in the first place.

How we keep these honest

Microsoft list prices are re-verified against Microsoft's own published pricing every quarter, and each calculator carries the date it was last checked so you can tell at a glance whether it has caught up with the latest change. Salary and tooling benchmarks are market midpoints from named sources, listed at the bottom of each tool, and every one of them is editable. If a calculator tells you the answer we would rather sell you, it is because the numbers said so, and when they say otherwise the calculator says that instead.
