Unified threat management

Also known as UTM

A single appliance combining firewall, intrusion prevention, antivirus, web filtering, and VPN.

UTM consolidates functions that once required separate boxes, which suits smaller sites where a rack of dedicated appliances is neither affordable nor necessary.

The trade-off is throughput. Enabling every inspection feature on an undersized appliance can cut usable bandwidth dramatically, so sizing should be based on inspected throughput rather than the headline number.

Where this comes up

Unified threat management sits inside our networks and infrastructure work. If you are trying to work out what this means for your own environment rather than in the abstract, that is the page worth reading next, and a short call will get you a straight answer faster than either.
